Why do we love this wine?

Barolo is always in the discussion of the top premium wine regions in the world. If you are bothering to read this, then you probably already know that it is a small area in Piemonte in Northern Italy that produces only red wines made from nebbiolo. Barolo itself is divided into 11 communes (sub-regions). Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most famous of the communes, is home to Ettore Germano. Now run by Sergio Germano, the winery is one of the top producers in Serralunga d’Alba and has been making wine since 1856. Prapò is one of the top Crus in Serralunga, and Ettore Germano has a tiny 1.5 hectare vineyard there. First planted in 1967, it has a southeast exposure and soil composed of mostly clay and limestone. After a hand harvest, the grapes are gently destemmed and crushed with a maceration period of around six weeks. Post-ferment, the wine goes into botti grande (2000-2500 litres) for a period of two years.

Crushed mint, rose, woodland berry and forest floor aromas lead the nose in this full-bodied stunner. Firmly structured but boasting poise and precision, the focused palate delivers red cherry, blood orange, tobacco and star anise alongside a backbone of noble tannins. A tangy oyster shell note lingers on the close.

Wine nerd stuff
